After School Debate Program

Students

What?

The Bluegrass Debate Coalition is thrilled to offer a free after school debate program to all middle school and high school students in Kentucky. The purpose of this program is to provide high-quality debate instruction to all interested students in the state. Classes will be fun, educational, and the skills learned will benefit students far beyond debate. We will prepare students to debate at tournaments, including BDC-hosted tournaments. However, tournament attendance is not required.

We are offering a novice and an intermediate course. The novice course is designed for students with no previous debate experience. Novice students will learn the basics of research, argumentation and public speaking, as well as an introduction to the format of Public Forum Debate. You can view a sample Public Forum Debate here. Each class will feature a short lesson, group discussion, and fun activities to practice new skills.

The intermediate course is for students who have previous experience and are looking to develop their skills. The curriculum and class design is dependent on what students most want to work on. The intermediate track will function more like a collaborative practice and less like a traditional class.

Courses will be led by BDC Director Lily Nellans and UK Debate Coach Genevieve Hackman.

Who?

Any middle school or high school student in the state of Kentucky is eligible to attend our program. Students are not required to have any previous debate experience or to be a member of their school's debate team, though we certainly welcome students from established teams.

When?

The program will run for six weeks. Students will attend 6 after school classes. Students should sign up for whichever lesson time works best for them. Students are expected to attend the same time and day each week. While attendance is not mandatory, students will gain the most from the program if they attend all 6 lessons. All sessions will be held online using Zoom.
